How To Be Your Own Handyman

A while back, I wanted to be a handyman. It seemed like a realistic aspiration. I needed to learn to fix various things around the house, and being a handyman looked like a decent way to make a little extra on the side. There didn’t seem to be much of a drawback to the plan.

I learned the hard way that diving right into wanting to become a handyman involves a lot of study and preparation. I can’t say it wasn’t fun, but I wish I didn’t jump into it blind.

Specifically, I wish I had someone teach me a lot of the stuff I only learned through trial and error.

Only after picking up the basics on my own did I realise I could have spared myself all that trouble either by hiring as needed or looking into one of the resources I outline below. If you want to learn, I’ll describe the ways you can do that.

One way to learn is through vocational schools. You can get training in some trades this way, whether you go for attending physically or an online program. Personally, I think being there in person is better because so much of the skills require you to use your hands.

However, vocational schools are usually very particular. If you’re looking to specialise, that’s fine. If you want to be an all-purpose handyman, you need an alternative.

Another option is for you to go on the Internet. Youtube is your friend. With a wireless connection, you can watch video tutorials on just about anything you can think of these days. You can learn anything that doesn’t involve activities that fall outside Youtube’s allowable content.

The catch with Internet tutorials is they’re not interactive. You can’t ask questions in case you’re lost, though you can see things and replay them if that helps. There’s also the issue of finding good tutorials, rather than ones that go over the broad strokes but neglect important details.

A third option is just to get practical experience, such as volunteering. Habitat for Humanity, for instance, has a program that can help you learn through doing. They build homes for the homeless, so you’re also helping a charity as you learn.

Habitat for Humanity and other organisations like this offer free training in various trades related to what they do. You can find out how things are done or practice the basics.

Finally, you could just take the time to find a mentor. Someone who knows the trade and can teach you, one on one.

We All Have Baggage

Who does not have baggage? That is the sole question which pops into my head when I ask a girl out on a date. Well, we all do have some sort of baggage of our past. Some of us have done some disgraceful things which we are not proud of and definitely don’t want our lovers to be a part of it. It may be anything, like this guy I know, he had been in relationships with ten different girls and now when he finally found his love, he does not want to share a picture of his past life with his girlfriend for fear of losing her.

To explain it further, this girl I knew was in jail once for a misdemeanour. But that does not mean that she is still the same person. Surely she has to carry this till the last breath of her life.

When we hit our 20’s, we are too young to have any baggage. In fact, we should not worry about our dates when we enter 20’s. Rather I should say young 20’s is the time when we start gathering it for the future. But when we enter 30’s, we are full of it. We always tell our friends if we meet a new girl or boy, he or she is good but… To fill this but we have lots of explanations, for example, she is beautiful, but she had three boyfriends in the past. She is perfect, but she is a bit old for me.

She is sexy, but she is not a virgin.

She is attractive, but she has a huge butt.

Is it even possible to ignore the past of the person and enjoy the present?

Well, for one thing, it is not impossible for sure.

Some people accept their past and move on while others repent about it forever. Like this guy I knew who gave a very good example when I asked him about his break up, breaking up with her was the worst decision of my life and it took me three months to get over her and move on with my life but down the line I realized how strong I have become emotionally with the passage of time. It’s just a learning phase where I have learned to not to feel any difference between happiness and sorrow.

This shows he does not care about the past rather he enjoys the burden of it.

Now the question arises, how can we manage not to let our past affect our present or future? Well, it’s very simple yet complex in many ways. The simple way is to move past it and enjoy the present life scenario without any burden of the past. Either that or you may let your past be an obstacle in your way of happiness. The ball is always in your court, and it’s just that you need to accept and appreciate your past. The moment we start seeing baggage as avoidable as other things, the very existence of it will get extinct much like polar bears these days.

So the trick to a happy life lies in being nonchalant with all the baggage you have been loading all your life. Don’t be ashamed of it, try feeling proud. It’s worth it.

Taking care of windscreens

I like to drive. When I drive, I don’t always have a smooth experience with it. Unpleasant things happen that get on my nerves or make me wish I didn’t go out that day.

Some of those annoyances are small. Running low on gas in a spot that doesn’t have too many petrol stations, for instance. Or I might realise that I need something – like a wallet or a camera – that I forgot to bring with me when I got out.

Sometimes, it’s a little bigger. There might be an emergency, a situation that will make me turn back. It might be something I’ve forgotten. I have to admit, that’s happened to me more than once. I go out for a quick drive and realise there is something I need to do or somewhere I need to be.

Of course, the ones that are the most taxing tend to be the instances when something happens to the car. Usually, it’ll be unforeseen, and it’ll be very annoying. In the worst of cases, I’ve found myself in danger because of a road-related problem.

Recently, something of that sort happened to me. I was driving on a back road. I was going out to think for a moment. I checked and made sure I didn’t forget anything, and there were no appointments for me to get to. A drive seemed like a good way to unwind for a bit.

Anyway, I was on the road, and I hear a cracking sound. I wasn’t sure what it was, and it didn’t repeat so I kept going. Yeah, that was a mistake.

Then the bang came. I’m not ashamed to admit that I started swearing when it happened, and I was shocked for too long. I decided it was safer to brake slowly, move off the road. Safer for me and everyone else on the road.

I learned later that doing this is a smart move. Panicking and braking hard would have sent me careening off and cause people more trouble.

Another thing I learned about windscreens that day is that they’re not that dangerous if they shatter. It’s fascinating. The glass on modern vehicles is designed so that if they shatter, it’s going to be in small pieces, not shards that can cut and slice.

Since I had a tinting film applied to keep most of the heat out, it was even less likely to shatter into cutting pieces. This made it even less likely that I would be injured, especially since I kept my eyes covered. Between my arm and sunglasses designed for driving, I wasn’t going to go blind.

As I talked with the guys who replaced my windscreen – you can visit website here – I learned that it shattering as completely as it did was a good thing. A partial crack would have made it hard to see anything. They said I might have had to do more damage to get visibility if that was the case.

I just wish I didn’t need to learn all of that the hard way.

How kitchen renovations have been for me so far

For years I had been promised a new kitchen and had all but given up hope of getting it. The old kitchen was old with brown colored cupboards that I had painted white. Mice were frequent visitors, although there seemed to be no way they could get in. Spiders were often hunted down and cockroaches had started appearing out of nowhere. The cupboard tops were always in need of cleaning and everything was just inconvenient for my age.

One day a man came to measure up for the new kitchen. Hooray, I thought, as he wrote down his figures and discussed color schemes, and so on. he gave me a time of about six weeks for the job to start. As that time came and went I had actually forgotten about it.

Some months later a doctor treated my extremely painful foot with an injection of the cells he had taken from my own blood (stem-cells). He was attempting to stop the pain and sent me home with strict instructions to rest the foot for a good 24 hours or so for the treatment to work properly.

Barely had I stumbled into the house and sat down when the phone rang. It was the guy to do the kitchen. It was Wednesday and he informed me they were coming on the following Friday to start work. What! I begged for more time, knowing that the entire kitchen had to be packed up.

He said they could not wait because they already had the kitchen on the truck and on its way down from Sydney and they would have no-where to store it. It had to be started on Friday.

From that moment on and for the next day and a half I rushed around on my foot packing things into boxes, loading furniture and other things into the spare bedroom, and finally emptying the fridge and loading its contents into an esky. By Friday I was almost a cot case when they arrived right on time at 7.30 a.m.

They started by hauling out the cupboards and sink. It was then that the big shock came. Behind the cupboards there was no wall. A large gaping hole went straight into what would have been the wall cavity and of course here is where the vermin were entering the house.

The large pantry that had been installed a few earlier was to be kept and moved to the other side of the dining room where it could be utilized as a sewing cupboard. The men hauled it into position but it wasn’t fixed. Later that night as I walked past it down it came right on top of me. Pinned between the cupboard and boxes of stuff from the kitchen I was trapped.

Slowly I managed to grab a chair and pull myself out but then another dilemma. Everything was locked up including the side gates and front gate. The keys were on the other side and so was the phone. Still trapped by my circumstances I gingerly had to crawl over the heavy pantry cupboard to get to the other side.

Finally, all was done and I look at the new kitchen. No more vermin come in, all the holes in the wall were covered or repaired, and the new cupboards reach to the ceiling so their tops never need cleaning. The beautiful new kitchen is a pleasure to work in and the extra room it has given me is marvelous.

Despite the pain and the cupboard falling on me the effort was well worth it. A new dishwasher and micro-wave were also installed and it is so good now it made a new woman of me.

Just an Update on My Health

Hi guys!

As you might have known, I sorta disappeared over the past few months from my blog. As a result, I lost my blog and have to start all over again. Don’t worry though, I still have all the posts from my previous blog but I am still thinking about it. Mostly because a lot has changed.

First, my disappearance. I didn’t really want to go. Ask anybody around me and the last thing I wanted was to leave my blog. Sadly, my doctor from insisted that I ensure I don’t over-exert myself. Without looking too much into my sickness, I needed a break. A lot has been going on and my body simply couldn’t handle it all. In my mind, I was mighty fine. My body apparently didn’t get the memo.

So I went into some sort of house arrest. I opted not to go on social media or any other online platform. As a matter of fact, my home phone was my only connection to the outside world. It was hell at first. I was so used to getting connected with people, going out all the time, having a few laughs here and there. Then here I was. A prisoner of my own doing.

After a few weeks of solitude, I found out what was really wrong with me. Aside from my physical illnesses, my soul was also sick. Sick of chasing time. Sick of being who I am not.

So like any person in his/her right mind, I decided to change. I dedicated the rest of my recovery days into changing who I am. I wanted to slow down. I wanted to be contented.

Because of this, a lot of my previous posts no longer hold true. I might still upload them one day, but for the mean time. I want to start fresh.
